Emergency Scenario Training at Townsville Airport Tomorrow

Release Date: 23 September 2014

Staff at Townsville Airport in partnership with the Townsville RAAF base, airline partners and state and federal emergency services will be undertaking bi-annual emergency scenario training this week.

Every two years, management of Townsville Airport is required by the Civilian Safety Authority (CASA) to conduct a field exercise at the airport to test the Airport Emergency Plan.

The emergency training will involve a simulated MRH90 helicopter crash, also involving a Fokker 100 aircraft, resulting in aircraft damage and multiple casualties.

Townsville Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Kevin Gill, said the public should not be alarmed if they see emergency services personnel in the airport precinct, nor will passengers suffer any disruption as a result of the exercise.

“We will be simulating a real emergency at the airport to ensure our operational procedures remain current. It is designed to test our response, Emergency Operations Centre and Airport Coordination Centre.

“There will be no disruption to passengers or flights. All activity at the airport will continue as normal,” Mr Gill said.

Senior Australian Defence Force Officer at RAAF Base Townsville, Wing Commander George Hodgson, said that exercising with emergency response services is an excellent opportunity to ensure that in the unlikely event of a real time situation we are all well prepared to respond to an aviation emergency.

‘We are committed to the highest levels of safety and emergency planning and this exercise which has been months in the planning and coordination stage will see us partnering with the Townsville Civilian Airport and other emergency services on what is an important part of our emergency response plan.’ Wing Commander Hodgson said.

Due to location and nature of the scenario, media filming opportunities will not be available.
