Townsville Airport welcomes Major Development Plan approval

Townsville Airport today welcomes Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss’ announcement that the Major Development Plan (MDP) for a $40 million upgrade to existing terminal and apron facilities has been approved.

The announcement comes at the conclusion of an extensive 60 business day public comment period and a further 50 business day review process by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

Chief Operating Officer of Townsville Airport, Mr Kevin Gill, said today’s announcement is a great win for the city of Townsville.

“While improvements have been made and facilities maintained, there have been no significant upgrades to the core airport infrastructure since 2003, leaving us behind other regional airports.

“Key areas including the domestic departure lounge, upper concourse boarding lounge, baggage handling areas and the security screening area have all reached capacity during peak periods.

“The redevelopment will ease congestion and improve passenger facilitation. As a result our passengers can expect a significant improvement in their airport experience.

“We will deliver ongoing facility improvements as well as hundreds of construction jobs throughout this project, at a time Townsville needs them most.

“We have a plan to improve the airport and this project is phase-one of a program of infrastructure upgrades that we will progress over the next 10 years,” Mr Gill said.

“While improvements have been made and facilities maintained, there have been no significant upgrades to the core airport infrastructure since 2003, leaving us behind other regional airports.

“In 2015 we welcomed the recommencement of international services and in order to be in a position to take advantage of further passenger growth into the future the terminal footprint needed to expand,” Mr Gill said.

“As the gateway to Townsville we understand the vital role we play in providing both the first and last impression for tourists to the region,” Queensland Airports Limited CEO, Mr Chris Mills, said.

Highlights of the MDP include:

  • Rationalisation of existing, underutilised office space to double the overall capacity of the departure lounge area
  • Upgrade and expansion of the security screening area to reduce congestion
  • Rationalisation of the existing check-in area to accommodate additional check-in kiosks and deployment of modern common user check in and automatic bag drop facilities
  • The addition of new shop front spaces, which are expected to be occupied by food outlets and other retail concessionaires
  • Extension of the upper concourse to provide two new club lounge facilities to help meet the growing needs of business travellers

Capturing the essence of the Townsville has been integral in the design to provide patrons with a sense of the North Queensland region upon arrival. Townsville Airport will remain open and operational during construction works.
